Tragic Accident: Body Recovered at Mackey's Pond After Boat Capsizes


The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is currently conducting an investigation into a tragic incident that unfolded on Saturday night at Mackey's Pond in Plymouth Township.

 

The Richland County Sheriff’s Office and Shelby Police were alerted when three individual’s boat capsized. Fortunately, two of them were able to swim to shore and are expected to make a full recovery.

 

However, in an effort to locate the third person, a comprehensive search was launched involving various agencies including Natural Resources Officers, the Plymouth Township Fire Department, the Willard Dive Team, the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, the Ohio Special Response Team (OSRT), and Shelby first responders.

 

The ODNR is taking this opportunity to stress the importance of responsible watercraft operation, emphasizing the need to always wear life jackets and remain aware of local conditions and advisories. The search ultimately concluded on Sunday afternoon with the recovery of the body.

 

Richland County Coroner, Bob Ball, has confirmed that the family has been informed, and the victim's identity has been released as Zachary Willis, a 24-year-old male. Furthermore, an autopsy will be conducted by the Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

 

The City of Willard Drone Unit, under the leadership of Ryan Gillmor, played a significant role in the recovery efforts.
